There are hundreds of different breeds of dogs, but there are some that over time stand out as the most consistent choice for pets. Here's a rundown of some of the more popular breeds that make good companions.

Labrador Retriever

One of the most popular dogs that makes an excellent pet is the Labrador Retriever. They're great for families because they get along with kids of all ages, they're extremely loyal, and very friendly. This breed had its origins in Canada, where fisherman would use them as work dogs to help them with their daily tasks. Because of their intelligence, Labradors are often often used to assist authorities in search and rescue, as therapy pets for patients with chronic illnesses, and to assist the disabled. With their friendly personality they don't do too well as watchdogs as they get along with just about anybody, even people. they've never met. Labradors come in hair colors of black, yellow, and chocolate.

Beagle

The Beagle can make friends with just about anyone with their outgoing personality. They've often been used by hunters due to their powerful ability to detect scents. Their colors are lemon, red-and-white, and tricolor. The Beagle also became the inspiration for Charlie Brown's dog in the comic strip "Peanuts". With their strong sense of smell they are often used in airports to detect illegal products being brought in.

German Sheperd

This breed originated in Germany towards the end of the 19th century and is known for its loyalty and devotion to families. German Shepherds are often used by the military and the police and are highly trainable. They are also used as therapy dogs, to help the disabled, and in search and rescue operations. A Shepherd makes an excellent guard dog because they are very wary of strangers.

Bulldog

Bulldogs were originally used in England as working dogs in vicious sport activities. However, the Bulldog we have today is a very gentle animal who makes a great family pet. Their excessive weight causes them to overheat in the summer months and they tend to be lazy and sleep alot. Despite all this, the bulldog makes a great companion for kids.

Golden Retriever

This breed came of Scotland during the 19th century, and were used for hunting. Like his distant cousin, the Labrador, the Golden Retriever is an excellent family pet who loves to play with kids. Because of his friendly personality, his guard dog potential is limited. The Golden Retriever takes to training very well and is very loyal.

Dachshund

This small dog is another breed with a keen sense of smell and were often used to hunt and track small game. Dachshunds are very playful and they love to be around children. Due to their short hair, they don't take well to the cold, so they need to stay inside during the winter months, especially if you live in a cold climate. With their distinctive sausage shape they are often referred to with affection as wiener dogs.

Collie

The Collie is a large dog that was originally bred in Scotland and was often used to herd cattle and sheep. They are a great addition to any household and are very sensitive to their owners wishes. Children adore these dogs and Collies love to go outside to play. This breed is very sociable and they don't like to be alone for long periods of time. Collies have keen senses and they will let you know when a stranger comes to your home. Once inside though, the dog's playful personality will take over, and they will want to make friends.
