Bulldogs

Bulldogs are very popular among Americans. They're known as great companions and have amicable personalities with silly traits. English bulldogs (along with their American and French cousins) are distinct in many ways from other dog breeds. They may also require special care that is unique amongst them.

Bulldogs need the same love and training as any other puppy would. Due to their body shape, however, extra cleaning and grooming will be needed to keep them healthy. Extra care must be taken with dental hygiene due to the bulldog’s jaw structure. It should also be noted that English and French bulldogs may develop respiratory issues as well.

What follows is a closer look at these Bulldogs and sources for buying or adopting them.

English Bulldog Puppies

The English Bulldog is a popular companion dog with a lifespan of 8 to 12-years. They were bred and trained to fight bulls. Through selective breeding over the last two centuries, they have become the affectionate pets that they are today. These friendly and loyal dogs made their way to the US from England.

Some characteristics that will manifest when they are still puppies is drooling and snoring. This is normal and caused by their extended lower jaw and shorter snouts. Dental care is important for this breed, so a routine of brushing should begin when they are still puppies. Their shorter coats of hair need minimal care, but they will need daily cleaning of the wrinkles around the face and tail to help prevent infections.

They should not be overworked, especially in hot and humid climates. They can be sensitive to the sun, and it should be noted that most do not enjoy swimming.

French Bulldog Puppies

These dogs are a smaller companion dog with a lifespan ranging from 9 to 11-years. This breed’s ancestors were smaller English Bulldogs that were taken to France during the 19th century. The French people began to select the Bulldogs that had erect ears (an unpopular trait among the English) and began breeding to improve this characteristic. These smaller bulldogs with standing ears made their way from France to the United States by the late 1800’s.

French bulldogs puppies must be delivered by Caesarean section, and they should have tests on their eyes, hips, and spine. They share characteristics with the English bulldog including drooling, snoring, and even wheezing. Their short hair requires minimal upkeep, but they will need the wrinkles on their face cleaned daily. They are not only sensitive to heat but anesthesia as well.

This breed cannot swim, and short walks on a leash should provide plenty of exercise. As with their English ancestors, they are not suited for outdoor living.

American Bulldog Puppies

American Bulldogs are a large and sturdy guardian breed that can live from 10 to 16-years. One theory of origin describes these dogs as descendants of the bullfighting English Bulldogs brought over to early America. Another tradition is that this dog is a mix of several breeds. The third possibility is a combination of both.

They are just as affectionate as English or French breeds that will require training from a young age by their owner to establish who is the pack leader. These dogs will drool and snore as well but are considered a healthy breed. It has a short, fine coat that needs just minimal care. They have strong protective instincts and should be socialized regularly.

Even as a puppy, American Bulldogs will require a decent amount of outdoor activity. With s history of being a guard and work-dog, they are able to tolerate climates and exercising far better than their cousins. It'll enjoy the water more than other Bulldogs do as well.

Buying and Adopting A Puppy

There are several sources available to acquire an American, English, or French bulldog including:

  • Professional Breeders: A professional breeder will specialize in one or more of the bulldogs discussed above. The benefits of using a breeder as a source for a bulldog is that puppies acquired from them will be weaned and usually have their initial vaccines already administered. The dog will be a pure-bred and papered. The only disadvantage is that the dog will be expensive.
  • Breed-Specific Rescues/Agencies: Organizations do exist that advocate for bulldogs, and there may be a local organization nearby. An advantage with these agencies is that puppies may be available at a cheaper price. The trade-off may be the dog may have special needs that require extra work from a new owner.
  • Animal Rescues/Shelters: It is possible to find bulldogs at a local shelter as well. They won’t be available for long because they are available at a cheap price. Often though, puppies found here will be mixed-breeds.
