Make Sure You Have All The Tools to Keep a Beautiful Lawn

Anyone who has some space around their home wants to maintain a nice lawn. It’s a great area for children or pets to play it. A nice lawn can be a place to relax in a lawn chair with an iced tea on a warm summer day. What’s more, lawns are a way to show a sense of pride in the maintenance of your home. 

The downside to a beautiful lawn is that it’s a surprisingly large amount of work to get them looking that way. With weeds growing everywhere and the changings of the seasons, you need to put a lot of effort into keeping your lawn looking great. The good news is that no lawn is beyond saving. With some tender care and an application of your green thumb, it can be looking great again in no time! 

Maintenance Tips

The first thing you need to do for a good lawn is to make sure that you’re getting rid of weeds and moss that grow in the lawn. However, most people forget about removing the thatch that develops. This is the layer of dead grass and other plant material that forms between the soil and the grass itself. It doesn’t let the water or nutrients get to the grass properly. 

Consider improving drainage in the soil. Again, removing thatch helps, but also aerating the grass will ensure that water and air penetrates into the soil well. You can rent an aerating machine, but aerating shoes are far more fun as you pierce the soil with your stabby sandals! 

A common mistake is over-cutting a lawn. Make sure to adjust the height appropriately. Only ever mow a maximum of one third of the grass height at a time. This ensures it can continue to grow in a healthy fashion. It’s also good to wait until the soil is dry. If you mow when it’s wet, it can damage the lawn, causing it to grow incorrectly. If you’re using a push style roller mower, make sure you change the direction you move with each mow.

If you want to keep your lawn looking great, then you’re going to need the right tools for the job. While not every item on this list is absolutely mandatory, they can make a big difference and make things much easier on a homeowner. Some of the most important tools include: 

• Lawn Mower - The right lawn mower depends on the size of the lawn. Riding lawn mowers are great in principle, but often far more than needed. Electric, gasoline or hand powered all work in the right situation. 
• Edger - These trimmers work to get those edges that a lawnmower just can’t reach. Proper use of a trimmer along the edge of areas really shows the crisp care that most homeowners want to take. 
• Rakes - There’s two types of rakes that are useful. A leaf rake is ideal for handling the leaves of fall or helping to rake thatch out of the lawn. A soil rake can help prepare problem areas for new seed. 
• Spreader - A simple spreader will allow you to evenly distribute fertilizer throughout the lawn, rather than risk it being too concentrated in a single area. 
• Hose and Watering Apparatus - People water their lawn in different ways. Many have built in sprinkler systems, which does make watering easy. If not, then a hose and sprinkler are important. Be careful not to over-water though. The best time to water your lawn is in the morning and evening, when the water won’t suffer from as much evaporation from heavy sunlight. 
• Soil Knife - A soil knife is perfect if you are edging your lawn and potentially adding gardens to it. This results in a clean cut and perfect edge.
